Please write a short profile about yourself - I am a 38 year old Fisheries Ecologist. My first introduction to fly tying was at the age of 11. A small fly tying vice and some materials were given to me by my Father as a Christmas present. I was then given a few Fly Tying lessons with Mr. Pip Brown an old fishing buddy of my Father. Fly Tying has been a passion and a hobby since then. I have now developed my enthusiasm for fly tying, into designing my own realistic patterns.
My favourite fly fishing pattern. - I think my favourite pattern at the moment is the Ammonite nymph. It seems to be universally accepted by any trout, on any water.
What other patterns and styles of flyfishing do you enjoy most. - All my fishing is carried out on Rivers or Streams. I particularly enjoy the challenge of small overgrown Rivers and Streams. CDC patterns interest me alot at the moment, especially those of Marc Petijean. The simplicity of design and use of CDC as the main material are in complete contrast to the realistic patterns that I am tying.
Is there a style of flytying you enjoy more than others! - As you may have realised I enjoy realistic fly tying the most. I have recently been designing my own realistic patterns. I particularly enjoy the creative and design process you have to go through.
What is your most memorable flyfishing moment? - It was on one particular evening's fishing in the Summer. I was just about to pack up, as I had only managed to catch a couple of small Chub. Nothing seemed to be rising but I thought I would change my nymph to a Cam Emerger and have one more go. Having done this, I managed to catch four nice Trout in quick succession from the same spot of under cut bank.
What is your most favoured piece of flyfishing equipment? - My current favourite piece of fly fishing kit is my William Joseph chest pack. It's light-weight, easy to wear, well designed and is great for short session fishing.
What type of flyfishing rod and reel do you use? - I have a number of rods and reels. But I do like using a little 6' Kudos Rod Co and small Orvis Battenkill for small streams.
What type of flytying will you be tying at the show and are there any specific tying techniques you will be demonstrating at the show. - I will be tying realistic patterns that I have designed at the show, and demonstrating techniques for extended foam bodies and gilling.
What is your favourite piece of flytying equipment? - My favourite piece of fly tying equipment has to be my Lawrance Waldron vice. I would be lost without it. The design and ease of use is unsurpassed.
Many thanks Peter and we look forward to seeing you at the show.
